So, you’ve decided to try life drawing but never went to art school? You’re in the perfect place.
At Chalk N Pencils, we believe everyone can tap into their creative potential, no matter their background or experience. Many of our participants are beginners, so you’ll be in great company!
Below, we’ll guide you through everything you need to know about our life drawing sessions.
At its heart, life drawing is about learning to see. It’s not about creating perfect artwork or worrying about technicalities. Instead, it’s an invitation to observe and interpret the human form with honesty and creativity. Whether you’ve never sketched before or you’re a seasoned artist, each session offers a chance to connect with your artistic side and discover something new.
Many of our participants describe the experience as meditative, a chance to focus entirely on the moment. This act of creating with your hands fosters relaxation and even enhances cognitive function, making it a truly rewarding practice.

Arriving at the Studio
When you arrive at our New Bahru studio, you’ll be greeted by our team and provided with everything you need for the session, this includes:
Session Flow
We begin with quick, poses (5/10mins) to warm up your hands and mind. These rapid exercises help you focus on capturing movement and gesture, loosening up your drawing style. From there, we’ll move on to longer poses (15/30) minutes giving you time to observe details and refine your work. A short break in the middle offers a chance to stretch, chat, or grab a refreshment.
Our sessions are designed to foster concentration and flow, so talking is kept to a minimum while we draw. If you arrive late, simply follow the instructions posted at the door to join us quietly.
Tools and Techniques
Charcoal is a versatile and forgiving medium. Experiment with varying pressure to create bold or delicate lines. Use your fingers or the kneadable eraser to blend and smudge, adding depth and shadow to your work. And don’t worry about mistakes, they’re just part of the process! Feel free to bring additional art supplies if you’d like to try something new.
Life drawing is more than just a skill-building exercise; it’s an experience that fosters creativity, mindfulness, and connection. At Chalk N Pencils, we focus on creating a space where everyone feels welcome, whether you’re here to improve your technique or simply enjoy the act of creating.
Our New Bahru studio offers:

Life drawing is an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone and discover the joy of self-expression. It’s not about being perfect or creating a masterpiece; it’s about letting go, exploring, and celebrating the creative process. You might surprise yourself with what you create, or you might not keep any of it, and that’s okay. The experience is what stays with you.
Ready to give life drawing a try? Join us at our New Bahru studio and experience the joy of creating in a supportive and inspiring environment. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned artist, we can’t wait to welcome you into our creative community.

Got questions?
We’ve got answers!
Yes, the models pose nude for all Life Drawing sessions at Chalk N Pencils. This allows artists to study the human form, anatomy, and musculature without distraction. We strictly enforce a respectful and professional environment. Please refer to our "A Few Things to Remember" section for our policy on respecting the model (e.g., no photography).
Our sessions are priced per 2.5-hour session. Pricing details are available directly on Eventbrite at the top of the page. We offer both single-session passes and discounted multi-session packages. Please check Eventbrite for the latest rates and availability.
Guided Sessions are led by our resident instructor, Priscilia. She provides structured lessons on techniques, anatomy, and composition and offers personalized feedback to help you improve your work. Non-guided (or Untutored) Sessions are independent practice for artists who prefer to work without instruction. The model will pose, and the studio manager will handle the timing, but no teaching or critique is provided.
Absolutely! While we provide willow charcoal, newsprint, easels, and boards for your convenience, you are welcome to bring any dry media you prefer (e.g., pencils, pastels, ink). If you wish to work in oil or acrylic paint, please ensure your materials are low-odor or solvent-free to maintain a comfortable environment for all artists.
Our Life Drawing sessions are adult classes and are open to participants aged 18 years and above only
