Our Name
“Chalk” represents the early stages of creativity, much like childhood, where art is about exploration without concern for permanence or precision. Chalk, forgiving and non-staining, symbolizes this free-spirited experimentation. As artists mature, they move to

“Pencils” – tools for more detailed, technique-focused work, embodying the refinement and skill development in older children and adults. Our name reflects our commitment to nurturing every stage of the artistic journey, from free exploration to skilled expression.

2009

“Art for children is something very different.
Unlike art to adults, it’s an expression for them.”

After graduating from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 2009, Ms Kheng started helping with their children’s programme. The following year, she began teaching as an instructor in both primary and secondary schools. Her initial experience working with pre-school children was at NAFA Arts Kindergarten, which completely changed her view of children’s art.

a studio to call my own

Initially, the studio at Joo Chiat was a personal space for Ms Kheng, where she could pursue her own practice. However, as students began to arrive, it evolved into a vibrant learning community, primarily focusing on children's art and fostering their creative expression through diverse art media.

A young girl drawing with chalk on a board guided by Ms Quin at Chalk N Pencils Art Studio

McQuin’s passion for art began at a young age, where she first captured attention with her talent, winning small awards and having her works presented and gifted to her school principals. Despite her early interest in art, McQuin pursued a diploma in Music from Lasalle College of the Arts, solidifying her deep connection to creativity across different mediums. It wasn’t until 2020, during the global pandemic, that McQuin rediscovered her love for visual art. This rekindled passion led her to launch her own art business, where she not only created and sold her works but also donated a portion of her earnings to charitable causes.

Her self-taught journey has allowed McQuin to cultivate a distinctive style and voice, centered around the belief that art should be both expressive and impactful. She has since expanded her practice by teaching art to children ranging from 3 to 17 years old at various art studios, as well as holding workshops for adults. In her teaching, McQuin emphasizes empathy, believing that understanding each student’s unique perspective is key to nurturing creativity and building confidence.

McQuin continues to grow as both an artist and educator, driven by her mission to inspire others through art while fostering a community of learning and compassion.
