We’ve put together answers to the most common questions from parents, so you can feel informed and at ease before joining us in the studio. If there’s anything else you’re wondering about, just drop us a message - we’re always happy to help.
What age can my child start art classes, and what age groups do you teach?
Children can start as young as 2 in our parent-accompanied Tot's N Fam class, and there is no single right age to begin - starting earlier simply means more years of creative play. We teach five age groups: Tot's N Fam (2 to 3 year olds, with a parent), Chalk I for preschoolers (3 to 4), Chalk II (5 to 6), Chalk III for primary school (7 to 12), and Pencils for teens (13 to 17). Each child joins the group that fits their age and stage.
My child is a complete beginner. Will they be able to keep up?
Absolutely! Our philosophy is centred on nurturing creative potential at any stage. Our classes are designed to be supportive and encouraging, allowing children to learn at their own pace. Instructors focus on providing individualised guidance, ensuring that every child, regardless of prior experience, feels confident and successful in their creative journey.
What kind of art mediums and techniques do you teach?
We believe in exposure to a diverse range of mediums to develop well-rounded skills. Our programmes cover drawing, painting (acrylic, watercolour, tempera), sculpture, print-making, collage, and mixed media exploration. Children learn fundamental techniques in line, form, colour theory, and composition through fun, engaging projects.
Do you offer drawing and sketching classes for kids?
Yes. Drawing and sketching are part of every child's regular classes at Chalk N Pencils; rather than a separate programme, we drill. With our youngest children, we put freedom and expression first, because focusing too much on drawing accurately too early tends to limit a child rather than free them. Learning to draw accurately is one skill; the freedom to draw is another, and in the early years, that freedom matters most. As the kids grow, sketching, shading and observational drawing develop naturally alongside painting and mixed media, and our Chalk III (7 to 12) and Pencils (13 to 17) students take them into more detailed studies.
Are all art materials included in the class fees?
Yes, all essential art materials required for the class projects are provided and included in the programme fees. We use high-quality, non-toxic, and child-safe materials. This means you won't need to purchase or bring any supplies, making the process simple and convenient for parents.
Can I join my child during the class?
Our regular classes are drop-off sessions designed to promote independence, encourage peer interaction, and allow children to concentrate entirely on their creative work in the studio. Nonetheless, some parents attend their own Adult Art Class during this time.
Do you offer trial classes before committing to a full term?
Yes, we offer trial classes for children who are new to our studio ($89 for 2 sessions). A trial class is the perfect way for your child to experience our teaching style and environment before enrolling for a full term. Please contact us directly or visit our booking page to schedule a trial.
What are your policies for make-up sessions or cancellations?
Our make-up and cancellation policies are detailed in our terms and conditions upon enrolment. Generally, we offer a limited number of make-up sessions for excused absences, subject to class availability. Please speak to our admin team regarding any scheduling concerns you may have.
